Treatment Pathway

We at Campbell Huber Orthodontics appreciate that patients may feel apprehensive about taking that initial step into having any orthodontic treatment and we understand that you may have lots of questions about the treatment options that are on offer and the pathway that you need to take before you get the smile that you have always dreamed of.

We have created this page to give patients an insight into the treatment process involved in modern orthodontics and have also created an A to Z of Orthodontic Terms page to explain some of the technical terms that you may have heard of but have never been quite sure of their meaning.

Initial Contact

To book a consultation you may call our practice yourself or ask your dentist to refer you to us. Either way we will send you an information pack that consists of a variety of information about our practice, the treatments options we offer and a price guide so that you can look over it at your leisure.

We will then get in touch with you to arrange a covenient time for you to have a consultation with one of our specialist orthodontists.

At your consultation appointment your specialist orthodontist will listen to your concerns to find out what you hope to achieve with orthodontic treatment. They will then carry out a full examination of your face, jaw and teeth.

Depending on the outcome the specialist will then discuss all treatment options with you. This appointment usually lasts for 20 minutes. The next appointment that you have is for diagnostic records.

Diagnostic Records

At the diagnostic records appointment impressions of the teeth are taken for plaster study models. This is followed by taking photographs of the patient´s face and teeth and then X-rays are taken with our digital X-ray machine.

These records enable the specialist orthodontist to plan the best course of treatment and to finalise your customised treatment plan. This appointment lasts for up to 30 minutes. Your orthodontist will then invite you to book a quick 10 minute appointment to discuss your treatment plan.

Active Treatment

According to your individual treatment plan active treatment will start with either removable or fixed braces. Your braces will be fitted and you will be asked to book an appointment every 6-9 weeks to have your brace adjusted. Active treatment usually lasts  between 6 and 24 months and the exact duration depends on the appliances used and the complexity of the problem.

Retention Period

Finally on completion of active treatment a period of retention is required to stabilize your teeth in their new improved position. You will be given the option of either removable retainers or fixed retainers. This is an essential part of your treatment.
