Oral Hygiene

It is highly recommended that before you have your brace fitted that you visit your dentist for a scale and polish as it is very important that your oral hygiene is of a good standard.

It is equally as important to maintain good oral hygiene whilst wearing a brace and that you brush your teeth at least twice a day. Ideally you should brush your teeth after meals and and before you go to bed.

Your teeth, braces and gums need to be as clean as possible when wearing braces as allowing plaque to form around your teeth and braces will cause your gums to swell and make them feel sore. This may lead to decay which can damage your teeth.

Once your braces are fitted you will be shown a DVD which will explain how to clean your teeth properly when wearing braces.

  • It is recommended to brush your teeth with a toothbrush that is  designed specifically for those wearing braces, these brushes have longer bristles on the edges and shorter ones in the middle.
  • A bottle brush (also know as an interdental brush) is a single bristled brush to help clean between the wires where food may get trapped.
  • Tepee brushes are small tuft brushes that help to remove plaque from around your teeth and gums.
  • It is also recommended that you use disclosing tablets as these little tablets will show up any plaque that has been left behind on your teeth.
  • Always use a fluoride toothpaste.

Please feel free to get in touch if you require any more information  on oral hygiene.
